Traditional naming guidance — the final name is the family's choice.
In the Hindu naming tradition (Namakaran), the first syllable of a baby’s name is chosen from the birth nakshatra and pada (quarter). Each of the 27 nakshatras is divided into 4 padas, and each pada has an assigned starting sound (akshara) — 108 in all. This calculator finds your baby’s nakshatra and pada from the birth details, gives the exact naming syllable, and suggests names that begin with it.
The Moon stays in one nakshatra for about a day, and a pada lasts roughly six hours, so the birth time refines which pada (and therefore which exact syllable) applies. If you don’t know the time, leave it at noon — the nakshatra is usually still correct, and we show all four pada syllables of the nakshatra so you can pick once you know the pada.
The Moon’s nakshatra is computed geocentrically in standard jyotish practice, so it does not depend on the city of birth — only the date and time matter. (Birth place is needed for the full kundli’s ascendant and houses, which you can get free on our kundli page.)
A pada is a quarter of a nakshatra (3°20′ of the zodiac). The akshara is the Sanskrit starting syllable assigned to that pada — for example, Ashwini’s four padas are Chu, Che, Cho and La. A name beginning with the birth pada’s akshara is considered auspicious and aligned with the child’s nature.
