Choghadiya: Meaning and How to Use It
Choghadiya (चौघड़िया, from chau-ghadi — "four ghadis", about 96 minutes) is the quick-reference muhurat system of North and West India, especially beloved in Gujarat and Rajasthan. It divides the daytime into eight parts and the night into eight parts, labelling each with one of seven recurring muhurats. When there is no time to consult a full panchang, people simply pick the next good choghadiya.
The seven choghadiyas
Amrit (nectar) — the best of all; suits every good work. Shubh (auspicious) — weddings, pujas, beginnings. Labh (gain) — business, trade, learning new skills. Char (moving) — neutral-to-good; ideal for travel and anything involving motion. Udveg (anxiety) — avoided, though government and administrative work is traditionally exempt. Kaal (death) — avoided, with an exception for activities that accumulate wealth. Rog (disease) — avoided; favoured only for combat and confrontation.
The sequence starts from the weekday lord's muhurat at sunrise and cycles through the planetary order, so each day's grid is different — and because the periods are eighths of actual daylight, the clock times shift daily and by city.
Day and night choghadiya
The day grid runs sunrise to sunset; the night grid sunset to next sunrise. Night choghadiya matters for late travel and night-shift beginnings. Note that the first choghadiya of the day always belongs to the day's planetary lord — Sunday opens with Udveg (Sun), Monday with Amrit (Moon), which is why Monday mornings are popular for new starts.
Choghadiya vs Rahu Kaal
They are independent systems and both are commonly respected: a Labh choghadiya can overlap Rahu Kaal, in which case most practitioners wait — Rahu Kaal's restriction is treated as the stronger signal. Our city pages show both side by side so the genuinely clear windows are obvious at a glance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which choghadiya is best for starting a business?
Labh (gain) is the classic choice for commerce; Amrit and Shubh are equally good. Many traders specifically open new account books in a Labh choghadiya on Labh Pancham after Diwali.
Is Char choghadiya good or bad?
Char is favourable, especially for travel and anything involving movement or change. It ranks below Amrit/Shubh/Labh for stationary auspicious work like a puja.
Why is my city's choghadiya different from the printed table?
Printed tables assume 6:00–18:00 sun. Real choghadiya divides YOUR city's actual daylight into eighths, so each slot's clock time shifts with season and location. Use a computed table for your city.
